Solar energy at Hillside Sustainable Living

Our solar canopy is now complete! The canopy array contributes 152kW of our total 400kW of solar energy provided throughout the Hillside campus. In addition to the 152kW solar canopy, housing units will adorn 4kW solar panels to supply the remaining energy in our array. Using a Community Solar program, the energy from the 400kW array is diverted to each residential unit and the Hillside community buildings, covering heating, air conditioning, hot water, and electricity costs. Our solar array is an amenity we provide to Hillside residents at no extra cost. We hope that through the solar energy created at Hillside, residents can experience a monthly electric bill of zero (if they do not exceed their array allocation, of course!).

The solar parking canopy is the first thing you see as you enter Hillside from Route 1. It roofs roughly 45 parking spots for Hillside residents and their guests, in addition to charging and housing our shared electric vehicles.
